Practical guidance on questions, sources, search settings, and the boundaries of AI-assisted research.

Getting started

What can I ask about?

Start with music, health, neurodevelopment, cognition, or brain structure. Mention the population, musical activity, and outcome you want to understand.

What makes a useful research question?

Be specific. For example: “How do researchers study musical training and attention in children?” Follow up by asking which studies support the answer and what their limitations are.

Who created Music Research Assistant?

The application is branded “By Avery Wang | Melodies 4 Medicine (M4M).” It is a Python project hosted on Hugging Face Spaces.

Where can I learn about the development process?

The Development page follows the process from extracting PDF text through passage indexing, retrieval, generation, and source display.

Sources & evidence

Does it search all of PubMed in real time?

No. The documented workflow searches a prepared local index. New or changed documents require an index rebuild and upload; automatic coverage of new publications should not be assumed.

How large is the collection?

The project’s research collection contains more than 2,000 publications on music, health, neurodevelopment, cognition, and brain structure. Documents are divided into searchable passages; a publication count is different from a passage count.

Does a PDF count prove peer review or PubMed indexing?

No. A collection’s size does not by itself establish the quality of every study. Check the publication, study design, and source details when evaluating a particular finding.

What do the numbered references mean?

The documented prompt asks the model to cite retrieved passages with bracketed numbers such as [1]. Check the associated source information and original paper to verify that the passage supports the claim.

Can I cite the assistant in academic work?

Use original publications as your evidence after verifying and reading them. The assistant can help exploration, but its summary does not replace a paper or a systematic review.

Is every answer based on retrieved passages?

Not necessarily. The public documentation describes a general-knowledge fallback when no passages meet the relevance threshold. Check the source material and any notes accompanying the response.

How the system behaves

What does a similarity score of 0.5 mean?

It is a threshold for semantic similarity between a question and a passage. It is not a 50% confidence rating, an assessment of study quality, or a measure of clinical reliability.

Why can the first question take longer?

The application loads the index and embedding model when they are first needed. Later questions reuse those objects within the running process.

Why might answer generation be unavailable?

The external answer provider can impose rate limits or experience interruptions. The documented workflow may still provide retrieved excerpts. Try again later if the service is temporarily limited.

Does the application read scanned PDFs?

The documented extraction pipeline has no OCR step. A scanned page may not contain text the pipeline can use, even if no extraction exception was recorded.

What information is sent to the answer provider?

The documented workflow sends the question, selected research passages, generation settings, and instructions to OpenRouter. Avoid entering private medical details or other sensitive personal information into a research question.

Responsible interpretation

What if an answer is unclear or seems incorrect?

Narrow the question, request clarification, and read the original sources. Treat unsupported or inconsistent statements as unresolved. AI-generated answers can contain errors.

Does Music Research Assistant provide medical advice?

No. It is an educational and research-exploration resource. It does not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatment, or replace a qualified healthcare professional.

What belongs in the gallery?

The Gallery is reserved for project photos, development moments, demonstrations, and related activities. Photos will be added as the project is documented.
